Water Sports

I want to begin this analytical analysis of humor by stating that I think only a few of the clips seen in this You-Tube video are funny. The other sections in the video I would describe as a horror film. The video is nothing more then a compilation of “funny” water sport clips taken over a period of time. When I first watched this video with a few of my friends they were laughing historically. I on the other hand only laughed at a couple sections in the video, and starred with horror at the remaining clips.

What made my friends laugh at every single section in the movie? Three aspects of this movie come to the top of my head in answering this question: everyone has been there, people can get into comical contorted positions, and everyone wants to be the actor.

Almost everyone who is capable of seeing this You-Tube video has had, or has seen a similar experience to one of the many shown in the video. People have failed miserable at water sports. In fact, one must be a beginner (make mistakes) to become an expert in any sport. People are not so much laughing at, but laughing with the people who are making the mistakes in the video because they too have similarly failed. By just watching a video one can recall one’s own feelings at having experienced or watched someone do a similar epic water sport fail! Americans can relate to other people’s humiliations.

No one can deny that (almost) all the fails in the video look painful, and that they involve a human getting contorted into animalistic positions at best. My favorite clip is when the rather robust woman who is standing on the dock with water skies goes flying off of the dock. The rope in her hands suddenly goes taught and she flies out of her water skies. The way she entrances the water is quite similar to how a frog would jump off a log and into the water! People find this humorous because they may not have ever thought of human positions being akin to animal positions. This video proves that humans (whether they want to or not) can be manipulated like stick figures.

When people do water sports there is usually someone else present to observe. The person doing the water sport then feels the responsibility to become an actor, in order to keep the spectator entertained. One becomes an actor by doing daring or funny actions. Often time’s people end up regretting that they did become the actor by doing an overly daring or stupid action that ultimately causes them to be thrown in the water. Americans do not like show-offs, especially those that fail miserably at what they are doing. In the “American Dream,” the people that do end up making it to the top of the ladder are not portrayed as show-offs, but are instead likened to humble people, ready to help those who are less fortunate. Don’t be a water sport show-off!

Parachuting

Why would anyone find this dangling calamity funny? I found this picture on the web of a man who's parachute got caught on the forefingers of an immense, pristine looking statue, called Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro. At this point, my reader might be crying “Stop, Stop, Stop, parachuting is not a sport!” I would beg to differ. According to www.marriam-webster.com a sport is 1) “a source of diversion: recreation” 2) “physical activity engaged for pleasure.” So, (I am sorry skeptics) parachuting is a sport; in fact it is one of the mast dangerous and daring of all sports! I might be among those “sick humor” people who find this picture funny, but I have multiple reasons to justify why this picture might draw a chuckle to many a face.

How smart and sporty is this man? The mere fact that he got himself hooked on such a gigantic object as this statue is no small feat. In fact, this statue is 130 ft tall! This is the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On July 7, 2007 it was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. This begs me to ask another question; is this man trying to become the Eighth Wonder of the World by making such a spectacle of himself? Due to his lack of skill, stupidity, and ill luck he hooked himself on the outstretched arm of Christ the Redeemer. Many Americans believe that if someone makes a mistake because of his own incompetence or circumstance beyond his control, he is fair game for laughter. The American lifestyle is one of striving to be the best and most successful. Any person who dramatically fails at attaining success is subjected to humiliation through ridicule and humor albeit at times subtle.

The second reason (now that he has gotten himself stuck) why some Americans find this picture humorous is because that cute and cuddly man hanging there looks like a baby or toy doll! The way his arms and legs are outstretched make him resemble a baby who got himself somehow hung on the corner to his crib. He is just ridiculous looking! Americans find humor in just about anything that is out of the norm.

What makes this picture especially paradoxical is the statue on which the parachute has landed. It is not just the size and position of the statue, but the fact that it is Christ the Redeemer. While Christ the Redeemer may have in fact saved this parachuter from a worse fate, it could also be said that he has ensnared him, causing him to dangle helplessly. Americans love ironic circumstances; comparing and contrasting what has happened, and what ought to have happened.

Why am I even writing this blog?

Dear Reader,

I want to start off by saying that I am just a mere amateur at “blogging.” In fact, this is my first ever blog! I set this account up because it is required for one of my college classes and because I am interested in humor that has, or is happening in sports.

What I will attempt to do in this blog is to analyze the cultural significance of sport humor. I will choose one or more sports incidents that have made the headlines or have caused commotion in the sporting world. I will then write about what the incident tells us about American humor, and/or what such humor reveals about the American culture. Please enjoy.
